Mission
The Tohoku Medical Megabank Project will help restore community medicine and create a system of next-generation medical care through personalized medicine by conducting large-scale genomic cohort studies in disaster-stricken areas of Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures.
Outline
The Tohoku Medical Megabank will work to improve health by conducting health surveys of residents in disaster-stricken areas and providing health counseling. The Tohoku Medical Megabank will also coordinate the establishment of medical personnel in disaster-stricken areas to restore community medicine. In conjunction with these efforts, Tohoku Medical Megabank will formulate cohort studies involving three-generations of local residents. Genomic data collected on these participants will then be integrated into and coordinated with regional healthcare information systems. In addition, biobanks will be created for genomic analysis in conjunction with other genomic cohort studies and biobank facilities nationwide. Through these endeavors, Tohoku Medical Megabank will restore community medicine by implementing next-generation medical care, including personalized medicine and preventative strategies, starting with Tohoku.
